Jim Rogers, Outdoor Programs Coordinator/Hoofer Advisor

ImageJim has been involved in Hoofers for a while including as a student leader during his UW-Madison student years. Jim enjoys several outdoor sports including windsurfing, cross-country skiing, hiking at Devil's Lake.  Jim really enjoys biking all around Madison. He is trained as an EMT, has taught over 15 years within the Department of Kinesiology (PE Elective Program), and in a previous lifetime worked as a substitute school teacher in the Madison Schools (as "Mr. Rogers"). Linda Bentz, Hoofer Advisor

Before joining Hoofers, Linda was a counselor and the Director of Upward Bound for UW-River Falls. She also has a background in small business operations.  Having competed previously as an equine cross-country eventer she now enjoys pleasure riding her horses on her small farm.  Her email is lbentz AT wisc.edu   


 Image Troy Clarke, Hoofer Advisor

Troy hails from New Hampshire via Oregon and Idaho where he received his Masters degree in Sport and Recreation Management.  He also has a degree in Adventure-Based Program Management.  His interests include climbing, biking, SCUBA diving, and hanging with his wife and coonhound.  He is a Wilderness First Responder and is actively engaged in adventure programming.  His email is tclarke AT wisc.edu

Outdoor Programs Office Student Staff 
 

The Outdoor Programs Office Student Staff provides customer service by assisting individuals with registration for the Hoofer Clubs and providing information about Hoofer activities.

Office staff transfers messages to staff and student leaders, communicates with fellow staff and students to maintain effective flow of information, orders office supplies as needed, provides training to new students and staff on office procedures, coordinates fleet reservations, processes all payments, initiates and completes projects to improve effectiveness, and much more. The work environment, particularly during the lunch hour and in the afternoons is often high-paced with extensive communication with club members, Wisconsin Union staff, and the general public.

Erin Hallbauer, Outdoor Programs Office Lead Student Staff

Anticipated Graduation Date: May 2008

Major: Sociology

 

Erin has a passion for movies, TV and radio. You will see her work in the UW-Madison fleet training video for student drivers. She loves to be outdoors doing various activities including running, biking, canoeing, swimming, sailing, skiing and playing softball. Family and friends play a key role in Erin's life as she loves to be around them. During her time at UW she is always looking for new opportunities to get involved and plans to travel after her time at UW.

Emmy Garner, Outdoor Programs Office Assistant
Anticipated Graduation Date: May 2010
Majors: Sports Management and Public Relations

Emmy's outdoor  recreation interests include downhill skiing, sand volleyball, biking, hiking,  and playing almost anything sport related.  She really enjoys planning and organizing events.  She loves being involved in many things including on campus clubs and volunteering.  You can recognize her on some days carrying a huge bag of volleyballs on her way to coach or out on her rollerblades. 

Kristin Paul, Outdoor Programs Office Assistant

Majors: Biology and Spanish
 

Kristin has been a UW Sailing Team member, a UW Alpine Team member and looks forward to becoming a physician.

Peter Coenen, Outdoor Programs Office Guru
Anticipated Graduation Date: May 2009
Majors: Medical Microbiology and Spanish


Peter has been a an active participant of the Ski and Snowboard Club and Sailing Club.  Peter enjoys Cross-Country Skiing, Soccer, Snowboarding, Ice Cream, Cheese Curds, and Traveling to far-off corners of the world.

Kate Krantz-Odendahl, Outdoor Programs Office Assistant   
Anticipated Graduation Date: May 2011

Major: Journalism

Kate enjoys canoeing, kayaking, has been a staff member of LakeTrails Base Camp (Minnesota) – a wilderness canoeing camp for teenagers – serving as a trail guide, camp counselor, kitchen assistant, and leading five-day canoe trips to Ontario.

Jess enjoys soccer, skiing, canoeing, kayaking, boating/sailing, and biking although if lucky, you can hear her playing flute or piano.

Hoofer Staff

Hoofer Clubs are coordinated by student leaders and governing boards. The following are some of the staff employed by the Hoofer clubs.

Kim Hokaj, Hoofer Equestrian Center Manager
Image Kim loves working with the horses and people at the Hoofer Equestrian  Center.  Her hobbies include working with greyhound rescue, watching movies (especially horror!), and camping.  She has camped around Italy and Iceland while  living in each country and was a professional ballet dancer in a long ago-far away life.  A graduate of Edgewood College, Kim is currently studying Animal Science at UW-Madison.

 

Matt Schmidt, Hoofer Sailing Shop Co-Director
Anticipated Graduation Date:  May 2007
Major:  Mechanical Engineering
 

Matt is currently finishing his education at UW-Madison in the College of Engineering.  He is an active member of the UW Sailing Team and enjoys spending time on the water, whether frozen or not.  During the summer months he spends time sailing or biking and during the winter iceboating or skiing.  Matt helps head the Hoofer Sailing Shop and oversees that all the sailing club equipment is maintained.  Whether it's reviving an engine that doesn't work, or sewing up a ripped sail – he'll take on any task.

Zach Vieth, Hoofer Sailing Shop Co-Director
Anticipated Graduation Date:  May 2008
Major:  Landscape Architecture

When not at Hoofers, Zach pretty much lives in the studio focusing on his education. He enjoys biking, traveling in Southern Wisconsin, and just hanging out on the Union Terrace.In the shop Zach most enjoys fiberglassing including training new students.

Brian Borkovec, Hoofer Sailing Head of Instruction

Now in his third year as Hoofer Sailing Head of Instruction, Brian has been a Hoofer since he first joined the sailing club in the summer of 2000. He coordinates the Hoofer Sailing instruction program, involving over 50 sailing instructors teaching more than 1,500 adult lessons each season, and the Hoofer Youth Program, which teaches about 400 youth in one and two-week sessions in the summer.  Brian earned his bachelor's degree in English from UW-Green Bay and worked in the field of Sports Information (Bradley University and UW-Madison) prior to teaching English as a Foreign Language in Prague, Czech Republic for two years. He has also worked as a substitute teacher, basketball coach, and track coach in his home town of Antigo, Wisconsin.


 Image Gaye-Lynn Clyde, Hoofer SCUBA Instructor

Gaye-Lynn Clyde is the instructor for all of the courses held by Hoofer SCUBA. She owns Diving Unlimited and Underwater Education in Watertown, WI, and has been teaching classes for over 15 years. She is one of the best and safest instructors in the area, offering certifications from beginning Open Water through Divemaster, plus numerous other PADI specialties.Gaye-Lynn may can be contacted at: glclyde@underwatereducation.com

Outdoor Rentals Staff

Outdoor Rentals provides a variety of outdorr related rental equipment. Fall season hours are Closed Monday and Tuesday and the rest of the week 11:30 till sunset.  For more information call: 608-262-7351

Bob Wright, Recreation Services Manager

Bob is the Recreation Services Manager overseeing the Union South Games Room and the Memorial Union Outdoor Rentals program.

Kerry Gabrielson, Outdoor Rentals Student Supervisor.  She supervises the student staff of the Outdoor Rentals program.
