Bessman Accessibility Fund

The Bessman Accessibility fund has been created to provide access to Hoofer programs for those with physical limitations. Funds have been used to pay for club memberships, modification of equipment, and purchasing new equipment. Through this fund many individuals are able to get involved and enjoy their outdoor experiences, particularly through accessible sailing.

Leonard Bessman was an active member of the Hoofer Sailing Club from 1973 until his death in 1994, having enjoyably windsurfed well into his 70s. In between windsurfing and sailing, he would educate members through a variety of stories including his time in World War II.

Peter Antaramian Hoofer Endowment Fund

The Peter Antaramian Hoofer Endowment Fund has been created to support special programs sponsored by Hoofer Council. Income from the Fund supports activities that encourage interest and participation in outing programs of the Hoofer Clubs.

Peter Antaramian was a Hoofer Alpine Team competitor, a Hoofer Ski and Snowboard governing board member, president of Hoofers, and President of the Wisconsin Union. During his time at the Wisconsin Union, Peter was the first recipient off the Lowell Frautschi Leadership Award, an honor given to students who have shown growth and talent in leadership and an understanding of the principles and ideals of the Wisconsin Union.  Being positive, enthusiastic, compassionate, effective and personable are some words that describe Pete. Not long after graduating Pete was diagnosed with cancer. During treatment he maintained his optimistic view and engagement in life including Hoofers and the Wisconsin Union. Indeed, he attended a UW-Madison Badger football game and visited the Wisconsin Union and Hoofers days before he died in September 2006. "Looking Forward," was Pete's motto.

Peter Antaramian Recruitment Fund

This fund has been created to recruit committee members and leaders in Wisconsin Union Directorate and Hoofers so they, too, can become outstanding leaders in the Wisconsin Union and the community.

This fund recognizes Peter Antaramian, leader in Hoofers and the Wisconsin Union.

Potential Areas of Hoofer Support and Endowments

If you desire to set-up an additional perpetual endowment fund, a contribution of $10,000 will start that fund. Check with the Outdoor Programs Coordinator [hoofer-advisor@rso.wisc.edu] at 608-262-6897 or UW Foundation to see if this may match your giving desires. Here is a partial list of possible endowment funds supporting Hoofers.

Hoofer General Endowment Fund

This potential endowment fund provides unrestricted funds to support Hoofer programs, activities and facilities.

Hoofer Facilities Endowment Fund

This potential endowment fund provides support to maintain and improve Hoofer facilities at the Wisconsin Union and beyond. Improvements to instructional space, meeting rooms, lakefront, piers, equestrian center, and additional spaces and locations continue to allow for  more effective and safer areas helping the Hoofer organization be outstanding.

Hoofer Youth Program Endowment Fund

This potential endowment fund provides support to provide great learning opportunities for youth to be involved in experiencing the outdoors. Funds donated have been used as scholarships for those who can not afford Hoofers, special community outreach programs and for improving youth-related facilities and equipment.

The Hoofer Youth Program has a strong history with Hoofers going back to the Junior Hoofers of the 1920s. These early youth largely consisted of Hal Bradley’s boys and their friends,. This helped lead to the forming of  Hoofers.  Over the most recent two decades over 1,000 youth have been involved in sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing, Scuba diving, horse back riding and more from  the area communities and even internationally. Many of these individuals have subsequently chosen to attend UW-Madison and become instructors and leaders within Hoofers, the Wisconsin Union, UW-Madison and their communities.

Hoofer Collegiate Teams

Hoofers supports University competitive collegiate teams that compete throughout the United States. Providing support allows these athletes to be involved and focus more attention on excelling academically and competitively. Funds donated by and for Hoofer teams have been used to purchase fleets of boats, and equipment; pay for travel expenses when competing; and partially cover costs when outstanding athletes qualify for nationals. Donations may be specified for the Hoofer competitive teams  or for a specific team.
